ESPN’s Broadcast Network for Australian Open & International Rugby Championships
May 2015 – Jul 2017
I was ESPN’s dedicated project manager for their Australian live sports broadcasts, working with ESPN on the annual Australian Open 2015-2017 & International Rugby Championships 2014. The deliverables were an ultra-low latency, broadcasting private line circuit between Bristol, Connecticut and Melbourne Australia to be completed within 25 days.
As the project leader, I initiated, planned, executed, controlled and monitored the project. Working with Telstra’s Australia team, a tech was dispatched to complete a site survey and a network designer planned the last-mile infrastructure requirements. Dark-fiber backhaul from Melbourne to Sydney was tested and activated, patching at Sydney cable landing station to a subsea fiber cable system connecting to Los Angeles. A dark fiber terrestrial backhaul connection from LA to New York was arranged via a third-party supplier Level 3 and from New York City to Bristol via third-party supplier Zayo. I coordinated and managed smart hands to complete cross-connects, test capacity, activate the service with ESPN’s broadcasting team and hand over the service. To mitigate the risks of the short lead time, I explored additional solution options via satellite broadcast. I managed a team of 6 people, including network designers, network technicians, SubSea Cable Engineers, Smart Hands, Network Engineers & Third-Party Vendors.
